In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the European Community (1957-2007) a most spectacular Leonardo exhibition in the grand Koekelberg Basilica on the outskirts of Brussels (August 18, 2007-March 15, 2008) is having an unprecedented success on account of the skillful and most attractive presentation of every aspect of Leonardo's powerful mind as made evident by his work as an artist, scientist and technologist shown in its historical and cultural context through original documents, excellent reproductions of works of art, original paintings and drawings as well as an actual size photograph on silk of the monumental and celebrated early copy of Leonardo's Last Supper in the Tongerlo Abbey. The exhibition also includes original manuscripts and drawings by Leonardo, the foremost presence being that of the Codex on the Flight of Birds, the loan of which has been exceptionally granted by the Royal Library in Turin for the first time to a location outside Italy.
The monumental Mole Vanvitelliana in the harbor of the Adriatic City of Ancona is the spectacular setting for a most original Leonardo exhibition. For the first time Leonardo's presence at Urbino and Pesaro as an architect and general engineer in the service of Cesare Borgia in 1502 is presented in a historical and cultural context that includes every aspect of Leonardos art, science and technology, and also his philosophical outlook. The rarely seen materials, presented here in a fully illustrated catalogue, are also discussed in detail by seven scholars of international repute coordinated by the editor.
Leonardo's Angel in the Flesh went on display for the first time in the great exhibition on Leonardo's Bridges organised by Sweden in order to celebrate its entrance into the European Community in 1993 and 1994. It received much attention by the media, making numerous newspaper headlines. And since it was all too easy to recognize the appearance of the demoniacal Salai - the handsome boy, object of Leonardo's presumed homosexual attentions - in this singular blasphemous image in the nude, the Swedish exhibition was to include another novelty, the counterpart of the same character in the painting of a Dressed-up Salai in the Alos Foundation.
The choice of the sheets of Windsor, with the addition of five sheets from other collections, is motivated by a chronological outline that offers a synthetic summary of the results achieved by Leonardo in almost thirty years of assiduous researches in the fields of anatomy and physiology. The selection emphasizes how these researches can be ascribed to the influence of anatomy teaching from the Middle Ages up to the time of Leonardo, particularly in Bologna and with protagonists that range from Mondinus to Zerbi and from Achillini to Berengarius. It is the first time that these scientific studies are considered, compiling a catalogue, with particular attention to the relationship that they have with the artistic theories of Leonardo.
